Györ
When Hungary was announced as the location for the 2019 AYA Europe Convention, it sounded exciting, fascinating and very distant. The thought of flying our own planes into a country which, not so long ago was under the clutches of a communist regime, seemed too good to be true. Our gallant hosts and organisers were to be Jack Maher and his lovely Hungarian-born wife Aniko.
Although living in the USA since the age of twelve, Aniko had retained the valuable language skills which were going to be vital for an event in a country with a tongue so alien to most Europeans.
Jack and Aniko decided that the 2019 event would be four days long rather than the usual three days. This enabled a more relaxed programme of events, with plenty of time to take a break, explore the town of Györ or just have a nap! Györ was a place unknown and unheard of to most delgates but, once there, we all realised what a treasure it really is.
With two rivers which join on the centre of the town, beautiful pedestrianised streets, lovely buildings and attractive restaurants galore it had loads to offer.
